Claude Is Now Free for US K-12 Teachers

2026-07-16 · Anthropic launched Claude for Teachers on July 14, giving verified US K-12 educators free premium access — including agentic tools, curriculum mapped to all 50 state standards, and FERPA-compliant student privacy protections.

On July 14, Anthropic launched Claude for Teachers, giving verified US K-12 educators free access to premium Claude — the same tier that runs $20 per month — plus a library of teaching-specific skills and curriculum connections mapped to academic standards in all 50 states.

The curriculum piece is what sets this apart from simply unlocking a paid plan. A feature called Learning Commons gives Claude direct access to state-by-state academic standards, the specific competencies beneath each one, and the typical sequence students learn them. Trusted resources like OpenSciEd and Illustrative Mathematics (IM v.360) are built in, so when a teacher asks for a lesson plan, Claude knows what a 7th grader in Ohio is supposed to cover this semester — not just a generic outline.

Teachers also get Claude Code and Claude Cowork, meaning Claude can carry longer tasks forward on its own between sessions. Anthropic designed automation for recurring teacher work: set Claude to review student exit tickets overnight and have the next day's lesson plan ready before first period. Partner integrations extend this into tools many teachers already use — Canva Education, MagicSchool, Diffit, Eedi, and TeachFX are all in the ecosystem at launch.

On privacy: student data is not used for model training. Anthropic added a K-12 Data Processing Addendum written to comply with FERPA, and is working with the American Federation of Teachers on broader privacy standards for classroom AI use.

Eligible teachers — any verified US K-12 educator — who apply by June 30, 2027 get one free year.

Here's a prompt worth bookmarking if you're a teacher or know one:

I teach [grade level and subject] in [state]. This week my students are working on [specific standard or skill — e.g., "thesis statements in argumentative writing" or "comparing fractions with unlike denominators"]. Build a 45-minute lesson plan with a short activation activity, one collaborative segment, and an exit ticket I can review quickly. Flag any prerequisite knowledge gaps students might be coming in without.

For teachers who want to help their students get real results from Claude — for studying, writing, and research — ClaudeCraft's Student Success Pack is built for exactly that use case.
